Sphalerite belongs to the sulfides family, with the composition of ZnS. It takes its name from the Greek, spaleros, meaning ‘treacherous’ which refers to the fact it comes in many forms and is often mistaken for other crystals. The colour of Sphalerite can occur in many variations including brown, black and yellow. It is found across many locations in the world, the most notable deposits in Mississippi, Canada, Mexico and Spain. It is a reasonably soft crystal, rating a 3-4 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
