Malachite is a crystal that has a unique and rich history. Its distinct green hues are instantly recognisable with the beautiful banding of dark and light green. Ancient Civilisations such as the Egyptians highly valued Malachite for both its aesthetic appeal and metaphysical properties. It was used a lot in Egyptian jewellery and amulets and was even ground into powder and used in eyeshadow and paint.

Malachite’s Physical Properties
Malachite is possibly the earliest ore of copper, it has been mined from as early as 3000BC. It is a green copper carbonate hydroxide, its name coming from the Greek for ‘mallow’, giving reference to its green leafy colour. Significant deposits can be found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, and Zambia, with smaller sources scattered around the world. It is a softer crystal, rating a 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
